Serve on the Community Police Review Commission

The Community Police Review Commission serves as a resource to the community to address concerns regarding the Austin Police Department.

  1. Apply online. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and will be reviewed when vacancies arise. If you are unable to submit an online application, email policeoversight@austintexas.gov. Before you apply, please be aware of the following requirements and disqualifiers.

    • Answers to open-ended questions that demonstrate an ability to develop consensus, work effectively on a team, and create positive change in organizations
    • A resume in PDF, DOC, DOCX, HTML, or plain text format
    • Agreement to serve neutrally, and always remain fair and objective
    • Consent to a criminal background check

    Commission disqualifiers

    • Having been convicted of a felony, received deferred adjudication for a felony, or currently being under felony indictment
    • Currently holding public office or being employed at the City of Austin
    • Being under the age of 18

  2. If your application is selected, the Office of the City Auditoropen_in_new will contact you for a criminal background check. This background check does not include a credit check.

  3. If your background check is accepted and your application selected as a finalist, the Office of Police Oversight will invite you to an in-person interview.

About the commission

The Community Police Review Commission (CPRC) consists of unpaid volunteers appointed by the City Manager to:

  • Make policy-level recommendations regarding discipline, training, community relations and the complaint process.
  • Address any other issues of concern by the community.
  • Review patterns and practices of the Austin Police Department.
  • Assess critical incidents and review individual cases of police misconduct.
  • Make fair and objective recommendations, as authorized in Article 16 of the 2018 Meet and Confer Agreement, pages 46-62 (PDF, 780 KB)open_in_new.
  • Assess the effectiveness of the Office of Police Oversight.

Expectations of commissioners

  • Attend subject officer interviews.
  • Review confidential case file information and videos.
  • Attend monthly meetings.
  • Draft recommendations and review individual cases of officers' conduct in a fair and objective manner.
  • Attend 3 community forums per year.
  • Serve for 2 years.
  • Commit 10-15 hours per month.
  • Attend training on civilian oversight.
  • Participate in multi-day trainings by the Austin Police Department, including training on:
    • Special investigations unit
    • Officer-involved shootings
    • Response to resistance
    • Police training academy
    • Crisis intervention team
    • Firearms
    • Bomb squad and special weapons and tactics (SWAT)
    • Participate in two police ride-alongs per year
    • Austin Police Association
    • Internal Affairs Division

Qualifications to be on the commission

  • Must be age 18 or older
  • Cannot hold public office or be employed by the City of Austin
  • Cannot have an immediate family member who is currently or formerly employed by the Austin Police Department. For purposes of this application, immediate family members are defined as parents, step-parents, siblings, children, and step-children.
  • Cannot have a felony criminal conviction, be under felony indictment, or have received deferred adjudication on a felony

Please be aware that when considering applying to the commission, and if selected, every commissioner must be fair, objective, and neutral. Commissioners must not favor a complainant or accused police officer and must make decisions based only on the facts and evidence.
